V&A East Museum Opens in London 2026
London’s cultural landscape is set to expand dramatically with the launch of V&A East Museum, a bold new chapter for the Victoria and Albert Museum. Located in the vibrant Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London, this innovative venue opens its doors to the public on Saturday, April 18, 2026. As part of the broader V&A East project, it follows the successful 2025 debut of the adjacent V&A East Storehouse and cements East Bank’s status as one of the UK’s most exciting cultural quarters.

Designed by acclaimed Irish architects O’Donnell + Tuomey, the 7,000-square-metre building features a striking, contemporary structure that reflects the area’s dynamic energy. Admission to the museum is free, making world-class design, fashion, and performance accessible to all. Some special exhibitions and events will carry a separate charge.
At its heart, V&A East Museum celebrates contemporary global culture and the transformative power of creativity. Two permanent “Why We Make” galleries—free to enter—explore why people create across time and place. Drawing inspiration from East London’s rich history as a hub for makers, immigrants, and innovators, these spaces highlight themes like representation, identity, social justice, environmental action, and wellbeing. Visitors will encounter a diverse array of objects: historic treasures such as Italian Renaissance paintings, 16th-century scent cases, an 18th-century Spitalfields silk dress, and 19th-century coral jewellery from India and Tibet. These sit alongside modern works by artists including Theaster Gates, Derek Jarman, and Rei Kawakubo, plus over 100 new acquisitions and co-productions featuring talents like Yinka Ilori, Molly Goddard, Bisila Noha, VIN + OMI, and more.

A monumental new sculpture by Thomas J Price greets visitors at the entrance, setting the tone for a space that champions underrepresented voices and global perspectives. The museum also launches a six-monthly commissions programme, debuting works by artists such as Tania Bruguera, Lawrence Lek, Rene Matić, and Carrie Mae Weems across both V&A East sites.

The inaugural temporary exhibition, “The Music is Black: A British Story,” opens alongside the museum on April 18 and runs through January 3, 2027. This landmark show traces over 125 years of Black British musical history through eight distinct genres, from early 20th-century sounds to contemporary influences. Highlights include Joan Armatrading’s childhood guitar, fashion worn by Little Simz, newly acquired photographs by Jennie Baptiste, Dennis Morris, Eddie Otchere, and Sam White, plus a partnership with BBC Music and East Bank. Tickets start at £22.50 (with concessions for students and under-26s from £10) and are available now.
The opening weekend (April 18–20, 2026) promises a vibrant celebration co-created with local creatives, young people, and East London communities, including events and performances, kicking off The Music is Black Festival in summer 2026.
V&A East Museum positions itself as more than a traditional institution—it’s a platform for dialogue, discovery, and change in one of London’s most multicultural neighborhoods.
