Collectors around the globe are actively bidding as Heritage Auctions’ International Comic Art Signature Auction #7473 continues with its Internet Session 2 today and tomorrow, April 19, 2026. This prestigious sale showcases hundreds of original comic art pieces spanning American, European, and international creators, running alongside compelling previews for the Illustration Art Signature Auction #8245, which closes on April 21.
The auction, held from Dallas headquarters, highlights the enduring appeal of sequential art as both cultural treasure and collectible investment. Session 1 on April 18 featured strong live floor activity, while Session 2 (lots 52001–52408) proceeds as an online-only session without floor or phone bidding, enabling worldwide participation through Heritage’s platform.
A landmark highlight leading the sale is Albert Uderzo’s original color cover painting for Astérix: Les Lauriers de César #18 (Dargaud, 1972). As co-creator of the beloved Gaulish series, Uderzo’s vibrant depiction of Astérix, Obélix, and a marble profile of Julius Caesar has generated significant pre-sale excitement. This rare finished cover painting represents one of the few times such a major Uderzo piece has appeared at public auction, underscoring the global cultural impact of the Astérix franchise.

The auction also features exceptional works by visionary French artist Jean “Moebius” Giraud, celebrated for bridging European comics with science fiction and cinematic design. Highlights include intricate pieces from series such as The Airtight Garage, Blueberry, and other dynamic, imaginative compositions that showcase his fluid linework and futuristic worlds.

American comic art is well represented with atmospheric pages and covers by Gene Colan, whose cinematic storytelling enhanced titles like Daredevil and Tomb of Dracula. Additional international selections include works by Jiro Kuwata and other masters, reflecting the sale’s broad scope across eras and regions.
Fantasy art enthusiasts will find strong offerings tied to the adjacent Illustration Art previews. The Illustration Art Signature Auction #8245 is headlined by three rare, fresh-to-market Patrick Nagel original acrylic canvases. These large-scale works capture Nagel’s signature 1980s aesthetic—crisp bold lines, cool minimalist tones, dramatic attitude, and elegant female figures. One standout is the untitled canvas colloquially known as “Tracy in Polka Dot Dress,” depicting October 1983 Playmate of the Month Tracy Vaccaro. Nagel’s canvases, often expanding on his commercial board work, are exceptionally scarce and highly sought after.

The sale further includes powerful fantasy illustrations by Boris Vallejo, featuring muscular heroes, mythic creatures, dramatic landscapes, and dynamic compositions that have defined sword-and-sorcery visuals for decades.

Collectors can also anticipate epic scenes by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, known for their richly detailed Lord of the Rings–inspired paintings and heroic fantasy compositions with luminous lighting and immersive storytelling.

Influential pieces associated with Frank Frazetta, the legendary godfather of modern fantasy art, add further depth with bold, energetic sword-and-sorcery imagery that continues to set the standard for the genre.

Heritage Auctions’ specialists note that this edition of the International Comic Art sale stands out for its depth and quality, blending historic European treasures like the Uderzo cover with contemporary fantasy and illustration market strength. Bidding remains robust online, with strong global interest expected through the weekend.
The event illustrates the maturation of comic and illustration art from popular entertainment to museum-worthy assets commanding serious collector attention. Whether drawn to Uderzo’s classic humor, Moebius’ visionary futurism, Nagel’s sophisticated pop elegance, or the Hildebrandts’ and Vallejo’s epic fantasy realms, this weekend presents rare opportunities to acquire standout original works.
